چکیده

A new dynamical model for the propagation of strangelets through the terrestrial atmosphere is proposed. Strangelets are small lumps of strange quark matter (SQM) which consist of roughly equal numbers of up, down and strange quarks. Since the suggestion of Witten[1]in 1984 that these strangelets, and not ordinary nuclear matter, represent the true ground state of QCD, this area of research has expanded considerably. The existence of stable or metastable lumps of SQM would have numerous implications for physics and astrophysics. Most importantly, they can account for the cosmological dark matter problem to a large extent, if not entirely [2]. Moreover, the mere existence of strangelets may be one of the most perfect evidences for the QGP phase transition that is believed to have occurred in the early universe or inside neutron stars. email: [email protected] email: [email protected] email: [email protected]

Cosmic-ray strangelets in the Earth’s atmosphere

If strange quark matter is stable in small lumps, we expect to find such lumps, called “strangelets”, on Earth due to a steady flux in cosmic rays. Based on recent model predictions for this flux, we find that strangelets corresponding to gaseous elements (noble gases, N, and O) accumulate in the atmosphere at high concentration. Metallic and semimetallic strangelets accumulate in suprisingly h...

Strange quark matter in cosmic ray flux and exotic events

There have been several reports of exotic nuclear fragments, with highly unusual charge to mass ratio, in cosmic ray experiments. Although there exist experimental uncertainties which make them, at best, only candidate ”exotic” events, it is important to understand what they could be, if they are eventually confirmed. Among other possible explanations, some authors have interpreted them to be l...

Propagation of Strange Quark Matter in the Atmosphere

We propose model of propagation of lumps of Strange Quark Matter (strangelets) through the atmosphere, which accounts for their apparent strong penetrability and normal nuclear-type sizes at the same time. The mass spectrum of strangelets reaching the Earth predicted by this model agrees very well with the existing data on the abundance of different elemets in the Universe.

Propagation of strangelets in the Earth’s atmosphere

A new model for the description of strangelets’ behavior in the Earth’s atmosphere is presented. Strangelet fission induced by colliding with air nuclei is included. It is shown that strangelets with certain parameters of initial mass and energy may reach depths near the sea level, which can be examined by ground-based experiments. Can cosmic strangelets reach the earth?

The mechanism for the propagation of strangelets with low baryon number through the atmosphere of the Earth has been explored. It has been shown that, under suitable initial conditions, such strangelets may indeed reach depths near mountain altitudes with mass numbers and charges close to the observed values in cosmic ray experiments.
